Vanessa Whatley began her career in infection prevention and control at Northern Devon Healthcare Trust in 1997. Since then she has held lead role posts in acute trusts in Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where the Team has achieved national recognition for rapid reduction in MRSA bacteraemia and Clostridium difficile infection rates as well as MSSA bacteraemia rates. From 2009 to 2011 Vanessa was Programme Specialist for Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) with the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority where she led regional work streams on the reduction of key risk factors and patient safety issues related to HCAI. Vanessa returned to Wolverhampton in 2012 where she holds the strategic lead for HCAI across the City as well as overseeing Tissue Viability, Continence Care, and IV Therapy Services. Vanessa has held an interest in the prevention of catheter-associated UTI for many years and has recently delivered a completed project, funded by NHSI, looking at the impact of long-term catheters on patient safety.
